How often should by chimney or stove be swept?
A clean chimney is a safe chimney. But how often you need to sweep it can vary widely, it all depends on the type and quality of fuel you are burning and how you are burning it.
In all cases you should initially follow Solid Fuel Association Guidelines.
- Wood – Every three months in use
- Smokeless coal - Every year
- Coal – Never burn coal in a stove
- Artificial logs – Every three months in use
- Demolition timber – every three months in use (Never burn proofed/painted timber)
And where possible you should also avoid burning wet or green wood, since this creates much more smoke and increases soot buildup.
If in doubt, get it swept!
We also offer a free reminder service, which we'll tailor based on the fuel you're burning and how you're burning it.
